Aqiqah, Qurbani, Nadhr, and Sadaqah: What Is the Difference?

Published · Last updated

The difference between aqiqah, qurbani, nadhr, and sadaqah is the reason for slaughtering, the timing, and the ruling, not the animal itself. Aqiqah thanks Allah for a newborn on day seven, qurbani is annual worship in the days of sacrifice, nadhr becomes obligatory once vowed, and sadaqah is open giving with no fixed time or cause.

When is aqiqah due?

An animal slaughtered in gratitude to Allah for the blessing of a newborn, due on the seventh day after birth. A confirmed sunnah according to most scholars, slaughtered in the child's name, not the father's.

It is the only one of the four tied to a new person entering the world, so it is recommended to show joy, feed people, and invite guests. If the seventh day passes it does not lapse, as stated in the fatwa Statement on Aqiqah (Arabic): "There is no fixed limit after the seventh day." This sets it apart from qurbani, whose time ends decisively at sunset on the last day of the days of tashreeq and cannot be made up afterward.

When is qurbani due?

An animal tied to a fixed time that neither moves earlier nor later, from after the Eid al Adha prayer until sunset on the last day of the days of tashreeq. Slaughtered for a person and their household as an act of devotion to Allah.

If slaughtered before the prayer it is just ordinary meat and does not count as qurbani, and this is the most common mistake people make. Unlike aqiqah which is tied to an individual occasion, qurbani is an annual act of worship repeated every year by anyone able to afford it. The fatwa Time of Slaughtering Qurbani and the Faults That Disqualify It (Arabic) states that the slaughter window extends four days: "The day of Eid and the eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth days until sunset."

When must a nadhr be fulfilled?

Here the ruling changes completely. A nadhr is a commitment a person places on themselves, such as saying: if Allah heals my son, I owe it to Allah to slaughter a sheep. Once the condition is met, fulfilling it becomes obligatory, not merely recommended.

The key with a nadhr is that it must be carried out exactly as vowed. If you vowed a sheep to be distributed to the poor, you may not eat from it, because you removed it from your ownership through the vow. This is the biggest practical difference from aqiqah and qurbani, which it is recommended to eat from.

So when you order a nadhr sacrifice, it matters to spell out your exact vow wording in the notes field: did you vow to distribute it entirely, or simply vow the slaughter without a condition on distribution? The difference between the two wordings changes how it must be carried out.

When is sadaqah due?

A voluntary animal with no time and no binding cause. You slaughter whenever you wish, for yourself or for someone who has passed, and distribute it entirely to those in need.

It is the broadest of the four, with no strict age condition, no time, and no fixed number, and the reward carries through to a deceased person if you intend it for them. This makes it the most suitable choice for someone who wants to give sadaqah for a departed loved one without a seasonal commitment or a fixed count. You can give it in any month of the year, in whatever number suits your means, with no counting of days or seasons.

Quick comparison

Type Ruling Timing Can you eat from it?
Aqiqah Confirmed sunnah Day seven and after Yes, and given as gifts and charity
Qurbani Confirmed sunnah Days of sacrifice only Yes
Nadhr Obligatory once vowed As vowed No, if vowed for the poor
Sadaqah Voluntary Any time The default is full distribution

Can you give more than one type on the same occasion?

Yes, there is no religious barrier to having a new baby and ordering an aqiqah while at the same time owing an earlier nadhr you fulfil with a separate animal. Each type stands on its own with an independent cause, and all that is needed is clear distinction between them at the time of ordering so execution is correct.

What is the practical difference that matters when you order?

If you have a newborn, order aqiqah. If you made a vow, order a nadhr and clarify your exact wording in the notes field, since execution differs. If it is sadaqah for a departed loved one, just write their name.

In the days of Dhu al Hijjah specifically, some people mix up aqiqah and qurbani because they sometimes fall close together in time. Our view is that the easiest way to clear up this confusion is to ask yourself about the cause, not the timing: a newborn occasion is aqiqah, an annual act of devotion for the household is qurbani, and neither one substitutes for the other.

At Qurba you choose the type from the first step, and every order gets its own tracking page with the time of execution and a filmed clip. You pay by card or Apple Pay, and you can order from any country with no shipping address, because all that reaches you is the tracking link and the clip, not an actual shipment of meat.

Questions people ask

Does aqiqah take the place of qurbani?

No. Each has a different cause, aqiqah is thanks for the newborn occasion and qurbani is annual devotion in the days of sacrifice, and slaughtering one does not cancel the other.

What is the biggest practical difference between nadhr and sadaqah?

A nadhr must be carried out exactly as vowed, so if you vowed it entirely for the poor you may not eat from it. Sadaqah is open in both timing and distribution.

Is it allowed to slaughter qurbani before the Eid prayer?

It does not count as qurbani and is treated as ordinary meat. Qurbani time begins right after the Eid al Adha prayer.

Is it allowed to give sadaqah with a sacrifice on behalf of someone deceased?

Yes, sadaqah through a sacrifice for a deceased person is permitted and recommended, and the reward reaches them by Allah's will whenever you intend it for them.

What if I vowed a sacrifice but did not specify who it should be distributed to?

The default for an unrestricted nadhr is distribution to the poor and needy, and you should refer back to your exact wording to determine the correct way to carry it out.

Is it allowed to give aqiqah and fulfil a nadhr at the same time?

Yes, each type stands on its own with an independent cause, and there is no religious barrier to combining them on one occasion as long as you distinguish the two orders at execution.
