How Is Aqiqah Meat Distributed, and Who Deserves It?
Distributing aqiqah meat is an open matter with no obligatory split. Some scholars recommend dividing it into thirds among family, relatives, and the poor, but this is a recommendation, not a binding requirement. You can give it all as charity, distribute it all to relatives, or make it into a feast and invite people, and all of this is permitted.
Once the slaughter is done, the real question comes up: what do we do with the meat? This is the part people differ on more than they differ on timing and numbers.
How is aqiqah meat divided?
Most scholars hold that aqiqah is recommended to be divided into thirds: a third eaten by the household, a third given as gifts to relatives and neighbours, and a third given as charity to the poor.
But notice the word "recommended." It is not an obligatory split that carries sin for departing from it, it is general guidance on expanding the benefit to yourself and to others. If you gave it all as charity, that is valid, and if you distributed it all to relatives, that is valid too. This is the text of the fatwa The Ruling on Aqiqah and How It Is Distributed (Arabic): "Some scholars treated it like qurbani, eating a third, giving a third as charity, and gifting a third, but there is no evidence for this. The better view is that he eats from it, or gives charity, or gifts it, with no fixed limit in this."
| Method of distribution | Ruling |
|---|---|
| Dividing into thirds among household, relatives, and the poor | Recommended, with no binding evidence |
| Giving it all as charity | Permitted |
| Distributing it all to relatives and neighbours | Permitted |
| Making it into a feast and inviting people | Permitted and recommended by many scholars |
Should it be cooked or distributed raw?
Many scholars recommended cooking the aqiqah and inviting people to it, since this shows joy for the newborn and makes it easier for whoever receives it. Others held that distributing it raw gives the poor person more freedom to use it as they wish.
The matter is open, and the choice depends on the people around you. Even if you choose raw distribution, the principle remains that it is a whole, sound animal, not leftovers or secondary parts, so you may not separate a piece and distribute the rest as though it were a partial qurbani.
Who deserves aqiqah meat?
There is no poverty condition as in zakat. It is given to the poor, the wealthy, relatives, and neighbours alike. But it is best to prioritise a relative in need, since that combines charity and maintaining family ties at once.
This point sets aqiqah fundamentally apart from zakat. Zakat is a financial act of worship with categories fixed by text, while aqiqah is closer to a recommended voluntary charity, and for that reason it is open to include everyone around you regardless of their financial situation.
Is it allowed to give the entire aqiqah to those in need only?
Yes, and this falls within the latitude the earlier fatwa described. There is no requirement to include family or relatives. Our view is that giving it entirely as charity is genuinely a good option for someone surrounded by people more in need than their relatives, and there is no harm at all in that choice.
Is it allowed to give the butcher meat instead of a fee?
The butcher is not given anything from it as payment for his work. His fee is paid in cash from your own pocket. But if you give him a piece as a gift after he has already been paid his full fee, there is no harm in that.
This is a point many people fall into unintentionally, especially those who slaughter at the market and leave the butcher a portion for his effort. The difference is subtle but important: a gift after the fee has been paid in full is permitted, but making part of the meat itself a substitute for the fee is not.
Should its bones be broken?
It is reported from some of the early generations that it is recommended to cut it apart at the joints without breaking the bones, as a good omen for the newborn's wellbeing. Most scholars view this as a recommended good omen, not a binding rule, so if the bone is broken the aqiqah is still valid.
Is it allowed to give it to people outside your own family or neighbours?
Yes, there is no religious restriction to a specific circle. As already mentioned, there is no poverty condition at all, so there is even less reason for a geographic or social restriction on who deserves it. The only standard is that the meat actually reaches people, not that it goes to waste or is lost.
How we handle it at Qurba
We carry out the slaughter in Africa, and the meat is distributed entirely to families in need there, with the distribution shown on the tracking page specific to your order.
We will say it plainly again: we cannot guarantee you a specific family, because case lists change from week to week. What we do guarantee is that the meat reaches people who genuinely deserve it, and that you see the distribution in the clip rather than taking our word alone. The name you wrote at the time of order is spoken aloud in that same clip, whether it is the newborn's name or whoever you specify.

Questions people ask
Must aqiqah be divided into thirds?
No, this is only a recommendation with no binding evidence for it. It is permitted to give it entirely as charity, distribute it entirely to relatives, or make it into a feast.
Must the recipient of aqiqah meat be poor?
No, unlike zakat there is no poverty condition, and it is given to the poor, the wealthy, relatives, and neighbours alike, with priority given to a relative in need.
Is it allowed to give the butcher part of the meat instead of his fee?
No, the butcher's fee is paid separately in cash from the meat. If you give him a piece as a gift after paying his full fee, there is no harm.
Is it required not to break the aqiqah's bones when cutting it?
It is not required, this is recommended by some early scholars as a good omen for the newborn's wellbeing, and it is not a condition for the aqiqah's validity.
Is it better to distribute aqiqah raw or cooked?
The matter is open, both are permitted. Cooking shows joy for the newborn, while raw distribution gives the poor person more freedom over their share.
Is it allowed to distribute all of the aqiqah to one family in need?
Yes, there is no requirement to distribute it to more than one party. The matter is open with no fixed limit on the number or the recipient, as long as it reaches those who deserve it.
